CSI has obtained Accredia accreditation of the tests necessary to verify the compatibility of a packaging with the composting process according to UNI EN 13432 "Requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation - Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging":
- Ultimate aerobic biodegradability under controlled composting conditions (% biodegradability) according to UNI EN 14046:2003
- Ultimate aerobic biodegradability under controlled composting conditions (% biodegradability) according to UNI EN ISO 14855-1:2013
- Degree of disintegration under defined composting conditions in a pilot-scale (% Disintegration) according to ISO 16929:2013
- Ecotoxicity test (% germination/ % growth) according to UNI EN 13432:2002
The UNI EN 13432 standard specifies the requirements and threshold values that the material must have in order to be defined compostable.
The standard also indicates the tests necessary to verify the conformity of the packaging: content of heavy metals and hazardous substances, biodegradability, disintegrability under controlled conditions, ecotoxicity of the compost obtained at the end of the composting process.
